Envirolak 170 primer and 170TB are high solids (70% by weight) water based primers that provide an excellent foundation for solid colors on MDF, solid wood, or for refinishing.

If you are not using 170/170TB primer on new MDF, it needs be catalyzed at a minimum of 3% with hardener!

170TB primer can be used on solid wood, or for refinishing applications as a 2K when mixed 3-5% with hardener to improve adhesion, moisture resistance, and durability. 170 can only be used as a 1K without catalyst directly over MDF.

170 and 170TB must be catalyzed for all surfaces except new MDF. 170 is only recommended for new MDF.

170 will block tannin and stains with 2 coats when catalyzed. It is recommended to wait at least 8 hours between coats. 170 and 170TB are the same primer. 170TB contains a tannin blocking additive.

This high-hide primer lays down very flat and provides unsurpassed filling properties. For MDF it will not swell the fibers like other water based products. It offers fast dry times and is easy to sand without being easy to sand through.

MDF should be sanded with at least 180 grit (preferably 320 for any routed out areas) or finer sandpaper prior to applying the primer. Two coats can be applied same day back-to-back without sanding between.

Typical systems:

2K system for refinishing:

This guide is for refinishing white or light colors in a 2K System with 170 Primer, , and the .

Apply a coat of 170 Primer with 5% CAT100-LV Hardener (2 hour pot life) ? 170 primer with catalyst will block tannin.

Sand using 320 grit sandpaper and refine with very fine or super fine sanding sponges

(Optional) 2nd Primer Coat 170 primer OR 170TB primer with 5% CAT100-LV hardener

Level sand using 320 grit sandpaper and refine with super fine sponges

1st Topcoat of 200 series ELNYW200, add 10% CAT100-LV Hardener (2 hour pot life)

If applying an optional 2nd coat, sand using 320 grit sandpaper and refine with super fine sanding sponges.

(Optional) 2nd Topcoat ELNYW200, add 10% CAT100-LV Hardener (2K)

Note: 800 series 1K or CAT150 Crosslinker can be used in above system over 2K primer instead of the catalyzed 200 series.
